ROARR '08, THE IIMC FEST

The fest was a huge success! Those who missed it really missed a lot. The success  was the result of a lot of hard work, togetherness and love for the institute. Most of the current batch students put in their 200% to make this dream of ours a reality. We've been trying to organize this fest for the past two months; it's so hard to believe it is over.

A very big thank you to all the faculty and staff members for cooperating with us. All the alumni who visited us, I hope you've had a good time. I hope that this tradition of IIMC fest that we've started is followed by our successors, and we get to see ROARR reach a greater height when we come back as alumni next year.

For photos and news on the fest, please keep an eye on Delhi Times. There is an article in the Nov 25 edition already.

Justice for Soumya - Please join Us !

From: Aditya Raj Kaul [mailto:kauladityaraj@gmail.com]
Subject: Justice for Soumya - Please join Us !

Forwarded Message by Achint Anand, Headlines Today

******************************************************************

All of you are aware of the tragic passing away of our colleague Soumya Viswanathan.

A promising young Producer, Soumya was loved by her seniors and peers, and revered by her juniors. Soumya was murdered while driving back home from work after completing an unusually long shift at work, having stayed back to help with her channel Headlines Today's coverage of the blasts in Gujarat and Maharashtra on the 29th of September, 2008.

She was killed by a bullet to her head in the wee hours of Tuesday, the 30th of September.

We are waiting for the police to find the person (or people) who committed this dastardly act. We are waiting for answers, as we struggle to come to terms with our dear friend's unfair death.

But while we wait, we want to help the investigation. We want to do what we can to do the only thing we can for Soumya – find the murderer, who is still walking free.

To that end, we want to launch a campaign – Justice for Soumya, of the sort we have participated in on numerous occasions for the likes of Aarushi Talwar, Jessica Lal, Nitish Katara, Priyadarshini Mattoo and others.

This note is to invite you to join the campaign. This is to request you to lend your voice, lend whatever power you have, to help us in our campaign.

Come. Bring your friends. Bring whoever you think can help us.

VENUE: The Press Club of India, Raisina Road, New Delhi

DATE: 4th October 2008 (Saturday)

TIME: 1.00pm

I am Sweta, an IIMC alumnae, working as a Lecturer in New Delhi. I teach television journalism. As a part of a research, I am collecting information for a poster presentation on the issue of 'Media and Global Divide'.

In this process I am conducting a simple survey (10 questions) of media academicians, practitioners and policy makers to understand the purpose and pattern of international news.

I would really appreciate if you could  take out a few minutes from your busy schedule to respond to the questionnaire (link below) by clicking on the options. It should not take more than 10-15 mins. But it will be a great help for me. Those who may have already responded can ignore this mail.

The abstract of the paper is pasted at the bottom:
Shall eagerly wait for your response.

Thanks

Abstract:

The paper analyses international news content disseminated by Indian News channels and its perception by the foreign policy makers, academicians and journalists in this era of globalisation. A sustained observation of the news content shows that the five main news agencies of the world continue to dominate news flow contents to these news channels. This hegemony contributes to the global divide in media.

Increase in international news content through multiple round the clock television news channels in India does not reflect diversity in content but only multiplies the limited perception of the world strengthening the North-South divide against the objectives of the New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO).

Many Voices One World, a report by the International Commission for the study of communication problems highlighted that the Third World Countries suffered from colonial hangover and due to historical reasons the flow of information and communication suited the interests of a few dominant countries of the world.

India led the third world nations to form the non-aligned news agencies pool (NANAP) with the primary objective of creating and disseminating information content that was critical for the development of these countries.

The fast changing media landscape in India with over 300 television channels and over a hundred news channels is witness to globalisation of information. In these circumstances the importance of television news is fundamental as it is the window to the world for most Indians. It creates the picture that we carry in our minds. If news is anything presented by the news medium then there is a need for a systematic understanding of what makes news, why and for whom?

While satellite and digital communication systems allow all possibilities to all countries in exchanging information, a sustained observation shows that   this has not been possible and the conventional patterns of news flow still exist. The five major news agencies of the world continue to take editorial stand for most of the international content that flows through these television news channels to reach the masses.  What is disturbing is the silence over the 'other' perspective.

Surveys, panel and focus group discussions are used along with analysis of the international news content of India's three national news channels which get posted on their online websites. A weeks prime time news content is studied to establish the imbalance in the coverage and treatment of international news.

No room for boys in IIMC...

Ajit Dubey reports in MidDAY

India's premier mass communication institute, the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) is contemplating to allot the newly constructed hostel meant for boys to girls.

The hostel was sanctioned by the controlling authority of the IIMC, about four years ago for boys, as they have to live in expensive rented accommodations in the areas like Munirka, Ber Sarai and Katwaria Sarai near the institute.

Problem child?

IIMC, which is all set to gain the status of "International Media University", already offers hostel facility to the girls. The management fears that girls may face "problems" due to the boys hostel in campus.

A Head of Department (HOD) of the institute said, "The management thinks that the 'coexistence' of both the genders may lead to unhealthy relationships between them and allotting the new hostel to boys would mean fuelling the disorder."

Another IIMC professor said, "This is an absolute nonsense. The youngest student in IIMC would be of more than 21 years and if adults want to get intimate, they can do it without living close to each other."

An official from the institute added that the management should take a cue from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, next to the IIMC, where boys and girls have common hostels.

When MiD DAY tried to contact the IIMC management, they refused to comment on the issue saying that they have not taken the final decision on the issue. Stuti Kakkar, director of the institute was not available for comment.

Friends, What you Say....

Please send me back your comments. We will forward it to IIMC management and Ministry of Information & Broadcasting as a petition.

IIMC to become an International Media University

Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Shri P. R. Dasmunsi has said that 'I am very happy to announce that we have decided to upgrade the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) as an International Media University. The Planning Commission has already approved the proposal and my Ministry is working to make this Institute into a world class media education, training and research University, by an Act of Parliament. This will fulfill the growing demand of the media industry to provide more trained and qualified professionals. He was delivering the convocation address at IIMC here today.'

On this occasion, Director, IIMC, presented the report. Smt. Stuti Kacker, Director, informed the august gathering that Post Graduate Diploma Course in Hindi Journalism, Post Graduate Course in Journalism in English, Post Graduate Diploma in Advertising & Public Relations, Post Graduate Diploma Course in Radio and TV Journalism and Diploma Course in Development Journalism were concluded successfully. The Director also conferred diplomas to these students.

The Minister presented awards to the students of the Post Graduate Diploma Courses. On this occasion, Additional Secretary, Shri Uday Kumar Varma, Media Heads, the faculty of the IIMC and distinguished guests were present.

Here is the full text of the convocation address by Shri P. R. Dasmunsi, Minister of Information & Broadcasting:

"Director of IIMC and Joint Secretary of the Ministry Shrimati Stuti Kacker, distinguished guests, faculty members, employees, my dear graduating students of IIMC and ladies and gentlemen.

• It is really a matter of pride and privilege for me to again address the young post graduates students of journalism- print and electronic media, advertising and PR courses of IIMC on the momentous occasion of the 41st Convocation of this premier institute. Convocation in the life of an Institute is an important milestone. It gives us an opportunity to pause and reflect- from where we started, where we are today and where we aspire to be tomorrow.

• As you all know this great institute was established in 1965 by the then Information and Broadcasting Minister Shrimati Indira Gandhi who later became Prime Minister of India. She was aware of the empowering power of information. She conceptualized this institute to provide trained information and media professionals to communicate change and development among our people. In the last four decades this vision has grown and IIMC is serving the nation by training hundreds of journalists, media and information professionals and development communicators.

• Today I would use this opportunity to pay my heartfelt tributes to our great leader late Indira Gandhi and all other renowned personalities and faculty members who were associated with this vision called IIMC.

• The Convocation is also an occasion to look forward, as time has come to think big. As you all know the Indian media industry is growing at much faster pace than our economy. It is one of the fastest growing sectors of our economy. A recent industry report states that in the last four years, the Indian media and entertainment industry recorded a cumulative growth of 19 percent on an overall basis. The report also predicts the industry is estimated to grow at compound annual growth rate of 18 percent in the next five years.

• This growth rate is almost unparalleled in the world. But to maintain and enhance this growth rate, the industry requires a large number of trained media professionals otherwise shortage of skilled and qualified professionals will hurt the growth rate of the industry.

• I sincerely feel that IIMC can play a greater role in providing good, creative and trained professionals to the industry in adequate numbers. Therefore IIMC needs to enhance capacity, start new and specialised courses and training programmes geared to the manpower needs of the industry. Our government is also giving top priority to the education sector. In fact the Prime Minister has rightly termed the 11th Five Year Plan as "Education Plan".

• I am very happy to announce that we have decided to upgrade the IIMC as an International Media University. The Planning Commission has already approved the proposal and my Ministry is working to make this Institute into a world class media education, training and research University, by an Act of Parliament. This will fulfill the growing demand of the media industry to provide more trained and qualified professionals.

• But as an international media university, the role and responsibilities of IIMC are also going to increase tremendously. As Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said and I quote "A university stands for humanism, for tolerance, for progress, for adventure of ideas and for the search of truth. It stands for the onward march of the human race towards ever higher objectives. If the universities discharge their duty adequately, then it is well with the nation and the people. But if the temple of learning becomes a home of narrow bigotry and petty objectives, how then will the nation prosper or people grow in stature".

• I hope that as a University, the IIMC will remember these words. I also hope that the IIMC will continue to provide journalists and media professionals who are not only truthful, ethical, fair, credible but also sensitive to the feelings of the people and society involved with nation building in a constructive manner.

• I strongly believe in free media but freedom demands responsibility. The Indian press had played a leading role in our freedom struggle and many of our freedom fighters were also great journalists. Overall, I appreciate the role of Indian media in nation building and strengthening the roots of democracy in the country.

• But unfortunately, the growing competition among media companies, if I may say so unhealthy competition is threatening all journalistic norms and values. It is certainly a matter of serious concern, as my ministry is receiving many complaints from the general public and concerned citizen groups. There are numerous instances of media excesses and media trials, fake sting operations, criminal tress-passing of privacy, glamourisation of criminals and mafia dons, promotion of hatred among communities and inflaming of raw emotions. This is a very dangerous trend not only for media but for democracy and all humanity.

• Before I conclude, I would like to say that, never in the past, has there been so much hope and expectation from India than at present. For young adults like you, the road ahead is long but the journey promises to be exciting. Have a constructive attitude and think in terms of solutions, not in terms of problems. Face each challenge not with "why you can't" but "how you can" and do remember that great opportunities come to those who make the most of small ones. Remember you carry a heavy responsibility in creating an informed and empowered citizenry.

• I offer my best wishes to all those who are receiving diploma today. As you move ahead in life, may you realize your dreams. Think of the future with hope and expectation but with your feet firmly planted on the ground. Carry with you the courage of your convictions and the determination to succeed. I congratulate you all on this occasion and wish you great success in life."

Success is not final, failure is not fatal !!

Many of us sweat even today when we think of our board exams but the IIMC Entrance Test is not a kind of test for which you have to run through every corner of your textbook or to mug up the class-notes and all sorts of definitions and quotations to fill up lengthy sheets.

So take a Chill Pill.

It's just a test of your creativity and your awareness about the current national and international problems and scenario and your linguistic skills.

A final Khuraq for you all-

"A person who doubts himself is like a man who would enlist in the ranks of his enemies and bear arms against himself. He makes his failure certain by himself being the first person to be convinced of it."

So have a good sleep tonight, have faith in yourself and give it Your best.

IIMCAA wishes good luck to all those appearing !!

आईआईएमसी एलुमनी एसोसिएशन की ओर से सभी अभ्यर्थियों को प्रवेश परीक्षा में सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रदर्शन की शुभकामनाएँ !!
