IIMCAA Awards 2021 | Rules and Criteria to Apply/ Nominate and Vote

Dear IIMCians,

The IIMC Alumni Association (IIMCAA) is now in its fifth year of the IIMCAA Awards. Our endeavor is to recognize the excellent work of alumni in different segments of mass communication and remain connected with each other.

We are announcing the opening of entries for 7 categories of the 12 categories of IIMCAA Awards, 2021.

The IIMCAA Awards were instituted in 2017 with 10 categories. The categories were expanded to 35 in 2020 before the current restructuring into 12 categories for the year 2021.

IIMCAA has reduced the number of awards in the competitive category, but has added a few more for felicitation. The central committee will be deciding the felicitation awards like in the previous years.

For professional awards carrying prize money, we have moved from specific beats and categories to broad areas of mass communication with the hope that a wide variety of work and many different alumni get to participate and showcase their prowess.

Also, the method of selection of winners has been changed. Instead of judging by a jury, we will now have the IIMCAA Members voting by email for the applicant's work and the one with the maximum votes will be the winner. This will keep alumni connected and actively linked with each other while giving a chance to the alumni to get to know and follow the best work of others.

IIMCAA Awards will celebrate the best professional work done by the alumnus, during 1 January, 2020 to 31 December, 2020. It carries a cash prize along with a trophy and certificate.

There is a prize of Rs 1,00,000/- for Agricultural Reporting and Rs 51,000/- for the rest of the competitive categories. Awards will be given at the Annual Alumni Meet- Connections 2021 at IIMC HQ, New Delhi.

General Criteria and Rules of IIMCAA Awards 2021

01. A PG Diploma holder of IIMC can send entries or can get nominated for categories open for awards to be judged by IIMCAA Members by email voting. Format for sending entries, nominations, undertaking and email votes are attached. Entries, nominations, undertakings or votes received not in the given format will be rejected.

02. An alumnus/ alumna may nominate another PG Diploma holder of IIMC for awards after taking and submitting written formal consent from the candidate. Third-party nomination will be rejected if a consent letter or email is not provided by the nominator.

03. IIMCAA will not include a name in the list of applicants based on a mere email if all rules are not followed and requirements are not met as prescribed. IIMCAA will not seek supplementary documents or any details. Entries will undergo scrutiny as received based on rules listed.

04. Applicant/ Nominator need not be a registered member of IIMC Alumni Association.

05. Applicants must submit a minimum one and maximum two outstanding works done during 1^st January– 31^st December 2020. The nominator will have to submit minimum one or maximum two works of applicants similarly on his/ her behalf.

06. Reports/ work for entries will be accepted only in URL or PDF format but size must not exceed 3 MB. Entries in any other format will be rejected.

07. Recommendation letter from the Head of the Organisation or Reporting Manager is must if entry/ work don't carry by-line/ credits. By-line entries or works with credit do not require a recommendation letter.

08. Entries in all Indian languages will be accepted without favour or prejudice, but the applicant/ nominator has to provide a suitable translation in English or Hindi to enable the IIMCAA Members to read, understand and make a choice.

09. Organisation name of winners, Designation or freelance status will be recognized in certificates and trophies of IIMCAA Awards 2021.

10. The decision based on email voting by IIMCAA Members in choosing winners will be final and binding for all the applicants.

11. Applicant must submit an undertaking duly signed by applicant only where:-

He/ She agrees to all terms and conditions of the IIMCAA Awards 2021. He/ She authorizes IIMCAA to use his/ her name, photograph, organisation name and entry for promoting the IIMCAA Awards in all communication mediums. He/ She will accept the final results of IIMCAA Awards 2021.

12. Entries/ Nominations must reach the mail id - awards@iimcaa.org only. Entries received on other email ids of IIMCAA will be rejected.

13. Deadline to submit the entries is 10^th January 2021 midnight.

14. IIMCAA will release category wise lists of the shortlisted applicants after the closing date. The list will be of those who qualify, based on Award rules listed.

15. Publication date for the final list of shortlisted applicants and works- 15^th January 2021.

16. Voting dates- 15^th January to 26^th January 2021 midnight.

17. Result Date- Annual Alumni Meet- Connections 2021 at Delhi.

18. Entries/ Work of candidates will be made available on the IIMCAA website for IIMCAA members to review and make a choice for casting their votes.

19. IIMCAA Members will email their vote in the given format at auditor@iimcaa.org only. Votes not complying with the IIMCAA format or sent to other email IDs of IIMCAA will be rejected. Non-members vote will be rejected.

20. Vote must come from registered email ids of IIMCAA members.

21. One alumnus/ alumna will be able to email their vote once only. One can vote for all the categories but only for one applicant in each category. In the case of members emailing more than one time, his/ her vote will be rejected if he/ she didn't specifically write to consider their latest email.

22. There will be no deadline for IIMCAA Membership with respect to voting for IIMCAA Awards 2021. Membership and voting for awards will run separately but simultaneously. An alumnus can become a member of IIMCAA on the last date of voting and vote as well for the awards.

23. Winners will be announced based on the number of votes they receive. The one with maximum votes wins. The central committee will choose a winner in case there is a tie.

24. IIMCAA will disclose the number of votes received for all applicants but it won't reveal the identity of which IIMCAA Member voted for whom.

25. If IIMCAA doesn't receive entry in any category or members do not vote in any of the categories then the award for that category will be dropped.

26. IIMCAA website hosts its members list publicly, who are eligible to vote for the awards. IIMCAA will not provide email id, mobile number or other details of a member other than what has been published on the website.

27. Central Committee members do not qualify for awards, but are free to vote.

28. Governing Council members do not qualify for awards, but are free to vote.

29. A Rule/ criteria can be altered by IIMCAA, in the larger interest of awards.

30. An audit firm will be hired to audit the whole process of IIMCAA Awards 2021 that covers Notification, Entry/ Nominations, Shortlisting, Publication of list of applicants and their work, Email Voting, Counting of votes and results.

Brief description of the categories of the IIMCAA Awards 2021

1. Alumni of the Year- Recognizing and felicitating a personality for his /her achievements and contributions to any field of Mass Communication.

2. Public Service- Projects and plans in the areas of social work, public welfare and development.

3. Connecting Chapter of the Year- A IIMCAA chapter that has made the maximum effort to connect the alumni in the year 2020.

4. Connecting Batch of the Year- A batch of IIMC which has kept the alumni spirit alive and has remained connected via visible on-ground activities during 2020.

5. Connecting Alumni of the Year- A special alumni who did the most to help and connect alumni during 2020.

6. Agricultural Reporting- Covering any issue related to agriculture.

7. Journalist of the Year (Publishing)- Journalistic work in any form of publishing in English and Hindi.

8. Journalist of the Year (Broadcast)- Journalistic work in any form of broadcasting in English and Hindi.

9. Indian Language Reporter of the Year (Publishing)- Journalistic work in any form of publishing in any Indian language other than English and Hindi.

10. Indian Language Reporter of the Year (Broadcasting)- Journalistic work in any form of broadcasting in any Indian language other than English and Hindi.

11. Ad Person of the Year- Work and competency in any area of Advertising.

12. PR Person of the Year - Work in the field of Public Relations, Image building, Advocacy and related areas showing competency and achievements in the field.

Karnataka Chapter met virtually on Sunday, 27th of December, 2020 in-order to reconstitute the chapter committee which was bereft of a President following Mr. Ramesh Muniyappa's resignation.

The meeting unanimously elected the following members:

The details of the above meet-up will be shared amongst the chapter members as soon as possible and the said meet will encourage participation from all members.

Ranveer Contributes IIMCAA Awards 2020 Prize Money to Medical Fund

Dear IIMCians,

IIMCAA Awards 2020 winner Mr. Ranveer ( 2008-09 Batch) has contributed his prize money of 21000 INR to the IIMCAA Medical Assistance Fund.

In an email to IIMC Alumni Association, Mr. Ranveer has said-

"I'm grateful to IIMCAA for its dedication towards the welfare and unity of IIMC Alumni. This is the second consecutive year when I received IIMCAA Awards in the investigative reporting category. Being selected for this prestigious award for two times is more important than any financial benefit. I've decided to donate my prize money to the medical fund. IIMCAA is free to help any alumni in case of his/ her medical need."

We are thankful to Ranveer for his noble support.

Prof. Jaishri Jethwaney has contributed royalties of her books to the Medical Fund also like last year.

IIMCAA Medical Assistance Fund Supports Mr. Padma Lochan Pradhan

Dear All,

IIMCAA Medical Assistance Fund Committee has unanimously decided and extended the financial assistance of 10,767 INR to Mr. Padma Lochan Pradhan of Odia Journalism, 2013-14 Batch who had sought help from IIMCAA.

The Committee, at a virtual meeting, approved the requested amount in full as support.

Mr. Pradhan, was admitted to the hospital with severe neurological and spine related problems. He has been discharged and recovering now.

CC Restructures IIMCAA Awards to 12 Categories, Prize Money Raised to 50,000 to 1 Lakh INR

The Central Committee met at IIMC HQ, New Delhi on 13th December, 2020. IIMCAA President Mr. Prasad Sanyal presided over the meeting that was attended by IIMCAA Awards Coordinator Ms. Simrat Gulati, Organisation Secretary Mr. Ritesh Verma, Secretaries Ms. Sadhna Arya and Mr. Komal Badodekar, CC Member Mr. Nitin kumar, Active alumni Mr. Pratham Dwivedi and Mr. Badri Nath.

Minutes of the Meeting:- 

1. Annual Alumni Meet- Connections 2021 will be held in New Delhi on 7th February or 28th February. A final decision will be taken in the January meeting keeping in view time required for sponsorship, preparations and situations beyond our control due to COVID-19. Dates of chapter level meets will be decided in February after reviewing sponsorship.

2. IIMCAA Awards 2021- CC has decided to keep 12 categories for IIMCAA Awards. CC will select winners of five categories for felicitation. IIMCAA members will vote via email to choose winners for the remaining seven categories which will carry a cash prize. Nomination, by self or others, to these seven categories will be open for alumni but winners will be selected by registered IIMCAA Members only.

A detailed notification will be shared separately for the IIMCAA Awards 2021 rules and process.

3. IIMCAA Scholarships 2021- The scholarships will be coordinated with IIMC, on the first semester closure.

4. IIMCAA Medical Assistance Fund- CC has resolved to save 5 Lakhs every year from Connections sponsorship to allocate that to Medical Fund. Unlike previous years, this amount will not be taken back if unutilised. CC will keep adding 5 Lakhs every year to this fund and it will be a continuous process every year.

5. Golden and Silver Jubilee Batch Celebration-  IIMCAA will celebrate the Golden and Silver Jubilee batches at Connections going forward. It will seek help from alumni in identifying, locating and reaching out to alumni of these batches via its network, website and social media handles. 

1970-71 Batch is Golden Jubilee Batch and 1995-96 Batch is Silver Jubilee Batch for Connections 2021. We appeal to all to share the name, contact details of IIMC alumni of these two batches with us.

6. Connections 2020 Closing Ceremony- CC Has decided to keep the closing ceremony of Connections 2020 in Ranchi on 20th December, 2020.

Governing Council Rejects CC Proposals, Retains IIMCAA Scholarship, Restructures Awards

Dear IIMCians,

IIMC Alumni Association Governing Council met virtually on 11th December, 2020. IIMCAA President Mr. Prasad Sanyal presided over the meeting that was attended by council members representing the central committee, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, North East, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Pune units. It discussed CC resolutions asking GC to scrap IIMCAA Awards and stop adding new Scholarships.

Minutes of the Meeting:-

1. The Governing Council unanimously rejected the proposal to stop the IIMCAA Scholarships and asked CC to retain the initiavite which provides 25000 INR Scholarships to 27 students at the moment. GC asked CC to explore adding more new scholarships to extend help to all needy students.

2. The Governing Council took note of the huge budget and manpower requirements that IIMCAA Awards require. It unanimously asked CC to restructure the IIMCAA Awards.  Awards will be divided in two segments- first will cover felicitations picked up by the central committee, second will carry cash prize and cover professionals awards for alumni based on nomination and votes by IIMCAA Members only. The central committee will come up with a detailed plan and procedures for IIMCAA Awards 2021.

3.  GC fixed the annual contribution to IIMCAA Medical Assistance Fund at 5 Lakhs INR every year which will not be taken back by CC if unutilised. It will add 5 Lakhs every year to the Medical Fund. 

4. GC asked CC to start preparations for the annual alumni meet Connections 2021 and fix dates in accordance with COVID 19 protocols and guidelines. 

5. GC Members raised the issues of Skill Enhancement Workshops for alumni; providing refurbished laptops to needy students and a bi-monthly or quarterly newsletter. CC has been asked to explore and get back on these issues.

CC Recommends Scrapping IIMCAA Awards and IIMCAA Scholarships to Governing Council

Dear IIMCians,

The Central Committee met on 1st November, 2020 at IIMC HQ, New Delhi. IIMCAA Awards Co-ordinator Ms. Simrat Gulati presided over the meeting that discussed the possibilities of hosting Connections 2021 and items to continue or do away in next season.

Minutes of the meeting:-

1. The Central Committee discussed the IIMCAA Awards and IIMCAA Scholarships in detail. CC underscored the resources IIMCAA Awards consumes and manpower it requires, to conduct it every year, is very huge. 

Affording such a noble but expensive initiative looks not feasible considering the response it gets in terms of active participation, involvement in IIMCAA activities or even membership. Same is the case with IIMCAA Scholarships.

CC feels that the alumni and the students look at IIMCAA Awards and IIMCAA Scholarships as a third party event and not as a way of connecting, getting involved and giving back to the association in any manner. 

An organisation, such as IIMCAA, entirely dependent on man-hours volunteered by willing alumni and sponsors for its activities, cannot sustain one way initiatives. Curtailing the number of chapter level Connections meets every year to retain these initiatives looks futile.

The Central Committee has unanimously passed a resolution urging the Governing Council to discontinue the IIMCAA Awards from 2021. 

CC has resolved to recommend GC to not to add any new scholarship and let this initiative lapse when the five year commitments of respective scholarships comes to an end in 2023 and 2024.

2. CC has resolved to request GC to take up these two items on an urgent basis so that the organising team has clarity on what is on, what is off for Connections 2021.

3. CC has resolved to utilise the savings in raising the amount of fund it earmarks for IIMCAA Medical Assistance Fund, If GC clears the proposal to stop Awards in 2021 and Scholarships in 2024.

4. CC has decided to host the Annual Alumni Meet- Connections 2021 on 7th February, 2021 in Delhi, if situation and guidelines allow. A detailed plan and date for chapter meets will be decided and communicated in due course.
